Home Protection Tips While You’re Away on Holiday

Going on holiday should be a time to relax and enjoy yourself—not to worry about the safety of your home. With a few simple precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of theft, damage, or unexpected issues while you’re away. The following home protection tips will help keep your property safe and give you peace of mind during your trip.
Make Your Home Look Occupied
An empty house is an easy target. Leaving a light on can help, preferably an energy-efficient LED light. However, remember to close the blinds or curtains so it doesn’t look like an obviously unoccupied home. Avoid creating patterns that clearly signal no one is inside.
Secure All Doors and Windows
Before leaving, ensure all doors and windows are properly closed and locked. Pay special attention to weak points such as sliding doors, balcony doors, or old window locks. If possible, ask a trusted relative, friend, or neighbour to check on your home periodically. Installing a burglar alarm system can provide an added layer of security.
Avoid Obvious Signs of Absence
One of the biggest giveaways that a home is empty is unattended deliveries. Old newspapers, flyers, or parcels piled outside your door signal that no one is home. Pause your newspaper subscription or ask a neighbour to remove any items left at your doorstep.
Be Careful with Information Sharing
Limit how many people know you’re travelling. While an “Out of Office” message is necessary for work emails, avoid setting similar messages on personal email or voicemail. Be cautious about posting holiday plans on social media—public posts can unintentionally alert the wrong audience.
Manage Electricity and Air Circulation
Appliances left on standby continue to consume electricity, which can lead to higher bills, especially if you’re away for several weeks. Switch off unnecessary appliances. However, it is advisable to leave one air conditioner running at a suitable setting to maintain air circulation. Keep internal doors open to allow airflow, which helps prevent humidity, mould, and unpleasant odours.
Protect Your Valuables
Do not leave valuable items such as jewellery, cash, or important documents unsecured in wardrobes or drawers. Use a locked safe or a bank deposit vault for items you’re not taking with you. Small home safes are widely available at hardware stores and provide effective protection.
Car and Key Safety
Avoid leaving car keys or spare keys in obvious locations inside your home. For additional security, consider disconnecting your vehicle battery if the car will not be used for an extended period.
Water and Plumbing Precautions
Check all water outlets for visible leaks, including taps, water heaters, and bathroom hand sprays. Turn off the main water valve inside or outside your unit to prevent flooding. Don’t forget to switch off the hot water system when turning off the main water supply.
Insurance and Emergency Preparedness
Contents insurance is essential protection against theft, fire, or unexpected incidents. It covers household items such as furniture, electrical appliances, curtains, carpets, and wall or ceiling finishes. Ensure your policy is active and up to date before travelling.
Residents in Dubai can also subscribe to the Dubai Police Home Safety Program. This service allows authorities to contact you if any issue arises while you’re away. Registration can be completed through the Dubai Police website, and the emergency contact number is 901.
